Documentary Modes

Expository
The fight for survival-Africa wildlife Documentary

Expository documentaries speaks to the viewers only providing them with commentary about the documentary topic which can include voice overs and to prove a point of view about this topic that is being portrayed to the viewers.

I have decided to choose The fight for survival-Africa wildlife Documentary as  a expository documentary This documentary is based on real life  how animals fight for survival in the wildlife and it gives the audience an account of  how these different  animals survive and kill their prey when they are in the wild.

This documentary about the wildlife portrays different camera angles such as long shots and medium shots of the variety of this documentary about the animal wildlife which is being filmed by hand and not using a tripod. To ensure that the audience get the best view to understand what is happening in the program. Also this uses a piece of camera technique in order to give the views to the viewers and help the audience to understand their feelings and emotions on how the animals kills other preys to stay alive. Through out this wildlife documentary it does include voice overs talking about the animals and providing the viewers that are watching by given them facts about all these animals that live in the african wildlife. This documentary portrays dramatisation by showing archive footage in this documentary and this also provides the viewers with the whole experience of what these animals do.

Another technique that is being shown to the viewers is realism by including good sound quality as the viewers that are watching can hear what the narrator is saying about these animals how they kill other animals to stay alive. Also at 34:08 it was not clear to understand what the narrator was saying to the audience because the animals were making a lot of noise. And this also includes narrativisation because there is an enormous amount of tension between the animals to viewers that are watching at 14:13-14:20.

Observational

Observational allows the film maker that is in the documentary to observe the event of a persons story and what they have accomplished and this also uses hand held cameras which is informal.

Supernanny
Supernanny is a documentary based on real-life parenting who are struggling to control their aggressive and troublesome children. The documentary highlights just how difficult the role of a parent can be and offers solutions to becoming a good parent. The parents are provided help by a nanny who observes the parent's method of parenting and explains to them where they are going wrong and what is the best way to deal with certain situations. Each supernanny documentary starts off with poor relationship between the parents and children and towards the end of the show the relationship improves significantly.

This documentary includes a variety of camera shots such as: medium shot, long shot and close up. The documentary uses multiple cameras in order to get the best quality shots and to ensure that the audience get the best view to understand what is happening in the program. Supernanny uses piece to camera technique in order to provide views to the audience and help the audience to understand their feelings and emotions. The sound quality was clear and the show is well-edited to maintain the attention of the audience.

Beween 0.00- 0.50 the narrator provides a summary of the the past events that have occurred between the parents and their children. The narrator also takes a pause between sentences to provide evidence by showing examples of the situation. For instance between 0.06- 0.07 we see a toddler using inappropriate language to demonstrate the aggression within the child. The purpose of the narrator is to help the audience understand the problems that exist between the parents and children. It shows how troublesome the children really are as well as the lack of parenting skills which results to a struggling relationship between them.

The documentary portrays realism as the nanny illustrates step by step guide to the parents in order to control their children. The audience witness a steady progress throughout the documentary as the parents and children eventually develop a mutual understanding resulting to a good relationship. The audience can relate to the documentary as many of them are parent or have been involved with young children.

There are many examples of dramatisation in Supernanny because there is an enormous amount of tension between the parents and their children. Any arguments between the parents and children will be deemed as an example of dramatisation. For instance, between 2.53- 3.01 the narrator states "communication has broken down" as the footage shows the toddler refusing to obey his mum and decides to throw his boots into a bush.

Interactive- is not the documentary makers story of the subject of the person of what the documentary is all about. This can allow the film maker to interview people that appeared in the documentary also the film maker also address the viewers by including voice overs.
Joanna Lumley Meets Will.i.am

This documentary is about Joanna Lumley interviewing Will.I.Am. She explore his success in the music industry as well as gaining a personal insight to what will.i.am is like as a person. The documentary uses hand hand held cameras in order to follow the guess as he explores the house he grew up in. The hand held cameras are used so the audience can see the house for the first time in the same way as will.i.am is seeing it. They also use multiple cameras to capture different camera angles.

The documentary contains realism not only through hand held cameras but also when the interviewer Joanna is discussing her impressions of will.I.am to the audience through a camera. Between 42.55- 43.11 there is poor quality of sound due to other vehicles driving past as well the presenter's own car making a lot of noise. This is indicated when Joanna said "There is a truck the size of a train coming past us". The theme is serious but with an element of comedy as we see a formal interview take place, however there are times when will.i.am and Joanna are making jokes. The documentary also shows the problems will.i.am had to endure when he was young such as living through poverty in a hostile neighbourhood. Between 24.05- 24.58 the audience see will.i.am's mum talking about the way she raised her children and how her parenting style led to will.I.am success.

There is dramatisation in the documentary through the use of archive footage and voiceovers. This is convey through introducing fellow band member apl.de.ap. At 17.44 to 17.50 there is an archive footage showing a music video of the band member they are going to interview. The archive footage is used to create excitement to the audience to a new guest as well as helping some of the audience members to understand who the new guess is and how he relates to Will.I.am.

There are various scenes of narrative which help the audience to gain additional information of the Artist. For instance, between 9.57- 10.04 Joanna discusses how will.I.am produced a song to help the american president campaign. This is used to impress the viewers and further show the level of success that will.i.am has accomplishted in his life. Whilst we cannot tell how many cameramen or any sound operators are involved in the making of the documentary there is a very short clip of one cameraman at 17.45.

Reflexive- The documentary maker has been apart of the story that is being portrayed in the documentary this also includes camera people that are being involved.

Catfish
I chose Catfish as an example of reflective documentary because it includes two presenters, Nev and Max who direct the documentary. Catfish is a show based on two experts tracking down a catfisher that has mislead a person through the use of social networking such as Facebook.  It is also a reflective documentary as these experts are learning about the unique situation as the show progresses, just like the audience. It should be noted that these presenters carry their own cameras and include cameramen as well. This helps to cover all camera shots: long, medium and close up to provide the best quality picture for the viewers.

There is dramatisation throughout the show as there is suspense to find out who the catfishes really is and tension increase through the confrontation between the catfishes and their victim. It also make use of achieve footage and voiceovers between 1.00- 1.11. This is used to introduce the victim to the audience and to enable the audience to understand the pain that the victim feels through this cat fishing experience.

The documentary portrays realism as the presenters are using hand held cameras at 1.15. It uses realism as it helps to keep the audience more engaged to the show and it makes the audience members realise that it is something that can occur to them. It is important to acknowledge that most people are using social networks so this documentary helps them to realise the danger of chatting to a stranger online. Whilst most of the sound quality is good, there is poor quality of sound at 5.28- 5.30 due to the presenters being on board of an aeroplane, which blocks out their voices and makes it harder for the audience to hear what they are saying. The show seems realistic in the sense that everything has been done in view of a camera and nothing has been discovered without the presence of a camera. In this show we see the presenters discussing the situation then they fly to Los Anegels to talk to the victim and she summarise her own situation. The story between the presenter and the victim match and gives the audience a clear understanding of what has happened.

The two presenters are narrating the documentary and through every sentence they seem to provide proof through showing messages on the social network site or showing pictures. For instance, between 1.20- 1.23 Nev states "However my catfish is not romantic in nature…" and then we see a clip of the exact same text written on an e-mail. This is to gain the trust of the audience members and further reinforce that this documentary is real.

Performative- the documentary film maker embarks on a experience by providing the viewers his views of his experience and also acknowledging what he has done.
An Idiot Abroad

I decided to use 'An Idiot Abroad' as a performative documentary as it based on Karl Pilkington travelling to various countries and experiencing the culture in that country. In this particular episode Karl is travelling to India where he experience living in poor conditions as well as going to some of India's tourist sites such as the Taj Mahal. This is a performative documentary as it is looking solely at Karl Pilkington and his views on his travelling experience.

It is important to understand the character of Karl Pilkington. He is portrayed as an honest person so if he does not enjoy an experience he will tell it straight to the camera. This helps make the show realistic as the audience are expose to his true views. The show is also realistic as it shows the stereotypes of India such as the poverty that exists, Indian food such as curry as well as the busy, noisy cities of India at 3.01. Also the documentary does not run as smoothly since there are issues of language barrier and cultural difference which the audience would anticipate. There is a lot of noise in the background which interferes with Karl's voice such as noise from vehicles or people talking in the background.

Dramatisation is included in the documentary as there are achieve footage and voice overs of the whole experience between 0.13-0.26. It is a preview of what is to come which makes the audience want to continue watching the show to find out what happens after. There are many themes portrayed in this show from the busy streets of India to the peaceful majestic site of the Taj Mahal. Tension is created as we see an unhappy Karl having an unpleasant experience which all the audience members can relate to. Karl is an emotional person who does complain a lot which further increases the tension.

Most of the narrative comes from Karl's opinions of his experience. It is very easy to understand for the audience to understand Karls' problems since the majority of the audience is from a 1st world country and India is viewed as a 3rd world country. The privileges of owning a comfortable double size bed is often taken for granted from most of the viewers. At 4.18 Karl is told that he be sleeping on the floor in a small room with four other people. Most of the audience members can understand that this would be a difficult situation for Karl to go through.
