Analysing The Competition

BBC News

The first show that I have chosen to analyze, as a competitor to my show is BBC News. The BBC News is broadcasted on BBC one, BBC NEWS and BBC Parliament.  The news runs 24 hours on BBC News and BBC Parliament however on BBC One there are certain time slots usually between 1-1:30pm, 6-6:30pm and 10-10:30pm to cover the latest events in the world. The aim of BBC News is to raise awareness to the audience members about what is occurring around the world. It summarizes the main events and looks into certain fields such as politics, technology, sports, etc.

As from the diagram showed above we can see that BBC News on BBC One has 5.46 million viewers. This figure is based over 7 days therefore it is the average amount of viewers over the 7 day period. BBC News is similar to my show in terms that both shows are formal and they both hold interviews. Also both shows contain archive footage as they relate to past events.

The video above contains examples of archived footage as well as interviewing techniques from BBC News. From 0.03-1.09 the audience sees archived footage of Danial Radcliffe acting in play as well as portraying his character in Harry Potter. Also Danial Radcliffe is interviewed from 1.21- 2.11 about his career and personal life. I believe my show will be able to compete with BBC News as my show is very specific to medical topic asthma whereas BBC News is very generalized. Also BBC News often portrays many negative topics such as crimes which makes the audience members feel unhappy whereas my show is much more educational as I show the audience how to deal with asthma attacks. In conclusion my show provides solutions to a vital medical condition and the news only questions why negative issues are occurring in the world.

The Great British Bakeoff

The next show I decided to compare to my show is The Great British Bake off. My show is very educational as I give details about the human anatomy whereas the Great British Bake off provides an insight into ingredients, which make up food.  The Great British Bake off aired in August and the show for this year has ended. It was on BBC One channel every Wednesday and its duration is an hour. The goal of this show was to take talented candidates and make them compete in a cooking competition. Each week a candidate is eliminated until there is a winner. This show has been designed to target people who have a passion for food and want to learn to become better bakers. The opening day of the Great British Bake off was 11.62 million, which were far superior figures than all the other shows on BBC one

Both shows are very educational and they both appeal to viewers who want to learn more. I believe my show can have better viewing figures than the Great British Bake off as I am firstly talking about a disease which affects 1 in 12 people therefore it is recognized globally. This will engage audience who have asthma or who have family members with asthma. Also people can relate more to their bodies compare to food and my show is more scientific.

DIY SOS: The Big Build

The last show I will be analyzing is DIY SOS: The Big Build, which is based on builders going around to fix people’s home.  The show particularly helps people who have difficulties such as being disabled or who do not have enough money to complete their house. It is on BBC One on Thursday at 9:00pm and its duration is 1 hour. The viewing figures of DIY SOS: The Big Build is 4.5 million which is fairly low compare to the rest of the other shows on BBC One. It should also be noted that BBC One has their own website and app which allows people to stream recorded shows called BBC Iplayer. This allows people to watch shows on their devices such as phones or tablets while they are on the go.

The similarities between my show and DIY SOS: The Big Build is that both will initially show the problems then follow it up with the solutions. For example DIY SOS: The Big Build usually shows the extent of damage to a house such as a leaking roof and then they will tell the audience what is the best way to solve this. Similarly my show explains asthma and how fatal it can be such as having an asthma attack and then I will explain what to do in the case of an asthma attack. Also both shows have expert opinion, DIY SOS: The Big Build have experience builders who are able to do any house building jobs and my show has a GP who has knowledge about asthma. I believe my show will be able to have better viewing figures than DIY SOS: The Big Build since my show is unique whereas DIY SOS: The Big Build is just another building show which has to compete with similar shows such as Cowboy Builders. MY show is very specific and there is not any other show, which looks at asthma. My show will appeal to people that have medical knowledge as well as people who want to learn more about the human body.

Conclusion

Based on the research above I would make sure my show does not appear at the same time as BBC News and The Great British Bake off. This is because the viewing figures suggest both of these shows are very popular which means it will be difficult to attract viewers to change from two very established shows to watch a new show. The audience is unlikely to take the gamble of watching my show since it is new and they would not be sure of good the quality of the show is. I do believe my show could easily compete with DIY SOS: The Big Build as the viewing is only 4.5 million and I think people be more interested in my show than interior design. However both and The Great British Bake off are only broadcasted once a week which means there are plenty of other days to put my show on which means I would not need to compete with these well known TV shows. This means I will need to ensure my show is not on a Wednesday or Thursday evening therefore I have five other days to put my show on air. I don’t believe I would need to worry too much about BBC News even though it is a popular show. This is because BBC News comes on various times of the day so viewers can easily watch BBC News at a later showing. Also the BBC News has its own channel, which shows the news 24 hours a day, not to mention there are so many other news outlets such as Sky News. The news is very easy to obtain such as through news apps, websites, newspapers, etc, whereas my show about asthma is not an easy field to obtain the latest information.
